Diabetes - a ticking time bomb
Diabetes causes severe health complications and is the fifth leading cause of death world-wide. The number of persons suffering from the "type 2" form of this disease is set to rise to some 900 million globally by 2030, with devastating health and economic implications. To counter this sinister scenario, increasing attention is given to research into the environmental and genetic risk factors for diabetes and obesity in specific populations.

Meet international key players in the field
Organised by the European Commission, this conference will bring together
• Leading scientists in the field from across the globe
• National funding agencies from different parts of the world
• National, European and international policy-makers
• Other key players in the field

Be a part of new international co-operation and partnerships
Under its current Research Framework Programme, the European Union supports a series of major scientific projects to better understand and combat type-2 diabetes. Each project focuses on a different region of the world. The conference will take this global approach further by presenting the state of play and by exploring opportunities for even greater international cooperation and new partnerships.

New opportunities for drug research in Europe

An event entitled 'New opportunities for drug research in Europe' will take place on 12 November 2011 in Krakow, Poland.

Conference attendees will be able to learn how Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) works and hear about participating in the project. Discussions will also centre on the benefits and opportunities offered by IMI to researchers in Poland and elsewhere. There will also be a networking session at the close of the conference.

The Innovative Medicines Initiative is a public-private partnership whose mission is to improve the drug development process by supporting a more efficient discovery and development of better and safer medicines for patients. IMI also supports collaborative research projects and builds networks of industrial and academic experts in Europe.

The half-day event will take place at the same time as the Congress of Polish Biotechnology and the Central European Congress of Life Sciences.

Conference on Regenerative Medicine

A conference on regenerative medicine will take place from 2 to 4 November 2011 in Leipzig, Germany.

Regenerative medicine is a research-intensive branch of medicine. Progress in the laboratory is often translated into clinical reality by teams of natural scientists, human and veterinary medical scientists all working together.

The event will be an opportunity for researchers to exchange views on the latest developments and bring together the stakeholder community. Young scientists and PhD students will have the chance to present their current research works. The conference will also gather leaders of companies involved in transforming research into cell and tissue engineered products.
